For those who are not familiar with the Sunday Social: We meet and decide on route and distance at the meeting time. It's a no-drop ride, conversational pace. We observe traffic rules, ride respecting all road users, and say Hi or wave at all 2-wheeled vehicles. Yes, even motorcycles. They face many of the same hazards from four-wheel motorists as bicycles do.

Meet at the Miss Forward Statue, State Street corner of Capitol Square, 5:15pm. Ride to Hubbard Avenue Diner in Middleton for pie. One-way distance: almost 8 miles.

This is a friendly social ride. But be prepared for some hills. To keep things scenic and interesting, we're taking Observatory Drive (climbing Madison's only hairpin turn) and also climbing Colgate Road in Shorewood Hills. Our just desserts at Hubbard ("Famous for Pie") will be well earned!

Make your own plans to get home from Hubbard - we're riding to our homes from there. We recommend you bring a bike lock and lights.

I am just about done cleaning up my main ride for riding season.  I have a very old Trek from the late 70's I was going to repaint, I just ordered decals for it.

I've been knocked around quite a bit (including twice across the road to the opposite shoulder) by crosswinds.  Days like today (which of course now the wind has died down) have forced me to stay off the roads and on the trails for fear of being road pizza.  Any tips to handle the cross winds (other than some lead water bottles).  Should I try to pedal through when a big surge comes along?  Lean a certain way?  Does anyone else get tossed around as much as me?

I am generally mechanically capable of figuring out stuff, but I can't get the pump to stay spring loaded into the top tube triangle.  And it doesn't come with great instructions.  It has a velcro strap also, but that is for stability.  I tried opening the pump head, holding the valve, etc, but naturally once I let go of the valve it is no longer tensioned to fit in.  Any help?  I can go back to the store and have them show me, but I won't necessarily have the bike and the pump together conveniently (Machinery Row).
